Meet Mohini, the soulful voice behind the mesmerizing melodies of her latest album, Waking Up in Wonderland. A singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Mohini weaves tales of love, self-discovery, and life’s enchanting moments through her heartfelt lyrics and captivating compositions. With a voice that resonates with emotion and authenticity, Mohini invites you to immerse yourself in a musical journey that transcends boundaries. Waking Up in Wonderland is not just an album; it’s an experience crafted by Mohini’s passion for storytelling through music. Mohini’s mission is to taste and share the nectar of happiness by creating and performing beautiful, love-filled songs for those in desperate need of a respite from fighting the good fight.
Accomplished singer, songwriter, arranger, author, teacher and yogini, Susan “Mohini” Kane’s career keeps transforming. Her early years as a pop singer and songwriter gave way to the lure of classical music and opera for the bulk of her career though she never stopped writing and performing her own songs. During Covid Mohini shed her skin of academia and made the leap into the singer-songwriter, recording and performing Indie artist world by writing and recording her first solo album of original songs Waking Up in Wonderland. Though it’s not quite clear what genre her songs fall into, they have been described as having a musical theater sound along side folk pop with its roots in Americana/folk and spirituality. Because Kane uses unorthodox vocal methods at times (in Wolf Moon, she howls) one might even decide that “alternative music” would more accurately describe her new music. Kane continues to perform in various projects as a free-lance soprano in classical, pop, and jazz projects.
Kane holds a Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and education from the University of Iowa and a Master’s degree and Doctorate in vocal performance from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A tenured full professor for many years, In 2020, Kane took her own advice and made the leap from the university into the world [The 21st-Century Singer: Making the Leap from the University into the World Oxford University Press, 2015].
Susan Mohini Kane’s debut Indie album: Waking Up in Wonderland was released November 17, 2023. Wonderland is a bursting forth of courage, a haunting echo of the soul, a call of the wild to the wild. Her thirteen inspired and artistically beautiful original songs certainly reflect her classical training hidden inside her Indie Pop Rock/Musical Theatre Style. Sometimes quirky (It’s Alright to be Happy), sometimes pure music theatre (What if I were No One) and sometimes sentimental with a country flair (Grandma’s Song), each song on Mohini’s new album features her soulful and light-filled voice. Her deeply personal songs come from her years of practicing meditation and yoga. One can hear references to both eastern and western spirituality in a vein of gold that runs through every song on the album. Each of the thirteen tracks also includes the sound of a triangle – it represents WONDER.
As a classical artist Kane has performed with operas and symphony orchestras across the country including Cleveland Opera Theatre and the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Making the leap into the Indie world has taken three years of hard work in retraining her voice and recording. You can hear her journey throughout her three album projects: A Moment of Joy , From the Heart & Waking Up in Wonderland.
